As the old adage goes, all good things must come to an end, and unfortunately my summer internship here at Xactly Corporation is winding down. It's my last week, and during the past few days I’ve started to reflect on my time here and all of the lessons I’ve learned about the corporate world, marketing, and life in general. Without further ado, here are five of my biggest takeaways from my amazing summer at Xactly:
1. Company culture is what drives a business forward
I was spoiled to have my first internship at a company that is so dedicated to having a good company culture. It didn’t take me long to notice that the people here genuinely love coming to work everyday, and want to do everything they can for the organization. It’s no coincidence that Xactly has had so much success, because it all starts with employees that are happy, dedicated to their jobs, and genuinely care about the people they work with.
2. The best seat in the office is the one next to the marketing closet
Oh how I will miss sitting next to the marketing closet everyday, and getting the first look and take of all the new Xactly swag. Free mugs, shirts, buttons, headphones, etc. The possibilities were truly endless, and I was the envy of all the other interns when I rocked the new gear.
3. Business isn’t all work, no play
While Xactlians certainly spend every day of the week working hard to keep the company running successfully, that doesn’t mean there isn’t time for fun. A big part of my internship was spent making friends with my co-workers on the marketing team, and most of my fondest memories from this summer were with them in non-work environments. Whether it was a baby shower, a housewarming party, or our lunch breaks, I always looked forward to hanging out with my new co-worker friends!
4. Listening and doing are the best ways to learn
During my time here I have spent many hours sitting in on meetings, and in some of them I struggled to grasp what was going on. As time went on though, I began to really get the hang of things. I kept on listening to what people were talking about and tried to apply it to my own work . Even outside of meetings, I learned both simple and complex skills by being near my employees and trying to emulate their successful work habits. Luckily, I got to learn from the best!
5. Sometimes, all you need to do is ask
Throughout the summer there were inevitably times when I had little work to do, or needed clarification on a project. At the beginning of the summer I felt anxious about asking my superiors about either of these things, in fear of being the annoying intern. I soon realized, though, that I shouldn’t have been worried at all. Everyone was willing to help, and sitting idle isn’t good for me or the company. This internship has taught me so much- from building relationships to writing blog posts I have been surrounded by learning opportunities at every turn. I couldn't be more grateful for the experience Xactly has provided me with and I will genuinely miss this company while back at school!
