You might not be thinking about data in the days leading up to the 4th of July weekend, but intelligent companies and entrepreneurs learn to capitalize on what people are interested in, study past customer behavior, and analyze products that have previously been sold to discern what will be bought in the future. Below are a few of my favorite Independence Day data points: The National Sausage and Hot Dog Council (NHDSC) reports that "Americans are expected to eat 150 million hot dogs over the July 4th holiday alone, part of the 7 billion hot dogs eaten over the summer season from Memorial Day to Labor Day." According to a recent Metro article, "During last year’s Fourth of July celebrations, Americans lit about 175 million pounds worth of fireworks. How much is 175 million pounds? A stack of pennies weighing 175 million pounds would snake out of the earth’s atmosphere, stretch far past the international space station, and extend over 10 percent of the distance to the moon." USA Today reports that in 2015 "Auto club AAA estimates that 41.9 million Americans will travel over the July 4th holiday, the most in eight years." If we can use data to discern the approximate number of goods being used on a given day, products being bought, and people traveling to certain locations think about what a plethora of data can do for your business.
